A Canção da Terra
Wine has often been enjoyed and celebrated along with another of life’s greatest pleasures, music. In this concert, three great Austrian composers evoke this connection in different ways. The program starts with a famous waltz by Johann Strauss II and ends with The Song of the Earth, one of Mahler's most original and fascinating creations. Written at the end of his life and unpublished by the time of his death, the piece can be classified between the genres of symphony and orchestral song, and derives from Chinese poetry, which Mahler serves with an especially imaginative and refined orchestration. Orquestra Sinfónica will also perform the rare and unique Der Wein, in which Alban Berg combines Mahler's inheritance, twelve-tone composition and a deeply eclectic expressive diversity.
