The fascination with describing nature formed part of the 18th century imagination. Rebel and Telemann wrote their works at a time when French models were changing. Les Éléments is a ballet that mixes the elements with chaos, in an innovative reading for the time. Water Music, which premiered in 1723, was written to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Admiralty of Hamburg. It is a work that uses the “word painting” composition technique, through which music imitates the real emotions, actions, or sounds of the theme being addressed, and where a group of aquatic deities are portrayed. The rigour of Baroque dance, ornamentation, and fantasy blend together in narratives that transport us to a period with very different concerns about environmental phenomena.
