A Paixão Segundo São Mateus

“What used to appear to all of us against the background of these times as a possibility that could only be dreamed about, has now become real: the Passion has been given to the public, and has become the property of all. “These are the words of Fanny Mendelssohn referring to the presentation of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in 1829, under the direction of her brother Felix Mendelssohn - a devotee of Bach who was responsible for the resurgence of the composer. Fanny's comment perfectly reflects the universal and timeless power of this work, which continues to impress and move us, more than 280 years since it was written. Starting from the last days of Jesus' life from the perspective of the apostle Matthew, Bach builds a work of monumental proportions combining anguish, pain and resignation, but also faith, love and transcendence. For a rendering as true to the time of its creation as possible, two in-house ensembles of Casa da Música join an amazing cast of soloists specialized in ancient music.
