  • The special Christmas concert of Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa begins with one of the most fascinating works in the repertoire for wind and percussion. Dionysiaques, by Florent Schmitt, suggests a Dionysian orgy through the intense contrasts that characterize the score. Daniel Pinkham recovers the medieval plainsong and other influences to give shape to a breathtaking work, performed with the collaboration of a guest choir. Frank Ticheli's Angels in the Architecture, a composition written in the 21st century, unfolds as a dramatic conflict between the two extremes of human existence: the divine and the evil. Valencian composer Carlos Pellicer dedicates his first symphony, Remembrance, to the writer Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas in a tribute to women that calls for gender equality.
