Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa | Set 2020
The fascination with the sound of wind orchestras is something that composers everywhere have in common. Celebrating its return to Sala Suggia with the famous anthem by the north-American Copland, BSP also plays the humorous and brilliant march by the British Vaughan Williams and the Hispanic flavored score of Joaquín Rodrigo, taking us back to the atmosphere of the famous guitar concerto that immortalized the composer. Stravinsky never hid his special affection for wind instruments, building a true sound mosaic where he shows all his mastery. At the European premiere of the Concerto for Horn by the Czech Václav Nelhýbel, BSP invites the award-winning Portuguese horn player Luís Duarte Moreira and ends the programme with the piece that the English symphonist Malcolm Arnold wrote to be specifically played inside a boat, a proposal similar to the one that his compatriot Händel received 300 years ago.
