Beethoven com Brio

Beethoven's Seventh leaves no one indifferent. Richard Wagner characterized it as “the apotheosis of dance”, referring to the contagious rhythmic liveliness that runs through it. In our century, Jörg Widmann called the Seventh, as well as the Eighth, an exercise in “fury and rhythmic insistence” that he tried to mirror in Con Brio, a work based on ideas from the faster movements of these symphonies and using the same instrumentation. From the pupil and right hand of Beethoven, Ferdinand Ries, comes the overture inspired by Schiller's drama about the Spanish court, Don Carlos, which would later make Ries one of the first composers to write this form to be performed specifically in a concert hall.
