The cuatro is Venezuela’s national instrument – a small 4-string guitar rooted on the Spanish guitar. It is used essentially in llanera, the traditional music of the plains. Although associated with traditional music, a new generation of musicians is trying to revive the instrument by extending its repertoire to classical music, jazz and contemporary music in general. The C4 Trio comprises three avantgarde cuatristas, Jorge Glem, Hector Molina and Edward Ramirez, alongside bassist Rodner Padilla. Since winning the 2014 Latin Grammy, they have travelled the world showcasing their extensive knowledge of the traditional repertoire together with more contemporary languages and improvisation.
