On World Music Day, we suggest a journey through the orchestral music of Romanticism and modernist ballet. The Corsair transports its listeners to the seafaring world and Byron’s texts, in a manifestation of the timbral colouring that underscores the musical action. The virtuosity of the composer-pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff is of particular note in an intense concert where soloist and orchestra compete and complement each other. Tennis was a fashionable sport which had its impact on the elegant society of the early 20th century. Debussy was inspired by such a game to create an avant-garde ballet, which premiered two weeks before The Rite of Spring. The dancer Ida Rubinstein commissioned an orchestral work from Ravel for her to choreograph. From this meeting of two great artists came one of the most famous works in classical music, the Bolero, an electrifying display of the instruments of the orchestra.
