O Canto dos Cisnes
Not many people have the privilege of seeing their birthday become a national holiday. Finland decided to honour Sibelius, while he was alive, commissioning the Fifth Symphony for the celebration of the composer's own 50th birthday. The work includes, in its finale, one of the most famous themes composed by Sibelius: an oscillating movement that resembles the ringing of bells, which the composer said was inspired by the singing of swans. The only concertante work in the composer's catalogue, the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra demands from the soloist an extreme virtuosity coupled with an expressive sobriety. The guest soloist is a prestigious violinist that the audience of Casa da Música has had the pleasure of hearing before, Viviane Hagner, who truly knows how to make the genius of the Finnish composer come to life.
