Carl Orff Os Carmina Burana
A journey to the High Middle Ages is the driver for this concert. The Germanic troubadour tradition, between courtly love and carnal love, inspired the plot of Tannhäuser. Based on a real figure, Wagner created a major opera representing Romantic medievalism. Harrison Birtwistle worked on three works by Machaut, the poet and composer of Ars Nova, in a modernist revisitation. The mathematical rationalism of the French Middle Ages as recreated in the late 20th century. Wagner and Birtwistle form the hors d’oeuvre for the public, followed by a controversial work in the History of Music, Carmina Burana, based on a medieval Germanic manuscript. Some poems are written in Latin and deal with practices condemned by the Order of St. Benedict. However, the parchments were found in a monastery. The texts and illuminations provided elements for the German Carl Orff to write a cantata of great choral and orchestral power, which contrasted with the modernist currents that the Nazis persecuted. This work will bring together on stage three of Casa da Música’s resident groups.
