Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música Bruno Borralhinho direcção musical Konstanze Pietschmann violoncelo Fernando Lopes-Graça Suite Rústica n.º 1 Dmitri Chostakovitch Concerto para violoncelo e orquestra n.º 2 - Sergei Prokofieff Sinfonia n.º 5 The cello occupies a prominent place in this concert, which is dedicated to the music of the 20th century. It features Konstanze Pietschmann, a rising artist and winner of the 7th International Suggia/Casa da Música Foundation Award. Romantic expressiveness is underscored by her virtuosity in Cello Concerto No. 2, where Shostakovich’s composition distils his unique style, showing great maturity. Bucolism and traditional songs punctuate Lopes-Graça’s work, which is almost cinematographic in character. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was written when the outcome of World War II was already perceived, namely the defeat of Nazi Germany. The echoes of war are embodied in a work dominated by virtuosity and ironic detachment.
