Max Reger’s Modernism was firmly based on traditions from the past. His particular approach stands out through its veneration of masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach, whose counterpoint he integrated into his works. In his Symphonic Prologue to a Tragedy, we can hear a piece that reflects the composer’s individuality at a time when new expressive forms were continually being developed.
