Upon hearing Berlioz's music for the first time, a British critic believed that calling it “original” was saying too little about the effect it had on listeners. With a rich palette of orchestral colours, the brilliant French composer was both admired and misunderstood, but he definitely re-founded the orchestra's sounds and brought it into a modern era. The Symphonie Fantastique, which he started writing in his youth with an intense and dramatic passion, remains his most famous work. In a late afternoon that celebrates the expressive potential of the orchestra and French music, the program begins with Manoury, one of the most famous names in contemporary composition. His new piece Anticipations surprises us with sounds that live around us and arrive from unexpected places, abandoning conventions and challenging the orchestra to explore the space of the concert hall.
